SAKFA Sport Kite Nationals 1998

The provisional dates for the 1998 Nationals are 24 - 26 September. It is intended to fly Precision and Free Style events over the first two days and the Ballet event on Saturday 26th. Sunday will be back-up in case weather causes a carry-over. The SAKFA Annual Festival is planned for 26 - 27 September, so the first two events will be flown immediately prior to the festival. This way the public will not 'get in the way' of that part of the competition that has limited spectator value anyway. In addition, more time will be available for competitors and judges to enjoy the festivities, and the Ballet can be flown at leisure !

The intention to organise the 1997 Nationals as a STACK sanctioned event fell through at the last minute due to time and economic constraints, but the 1998 event will almost definitely be a STACK event - so now is a good time to take out your membership !

Without STACK we would not have international competitive sport kiting, no precision figures, judges, and so on. STACK membership allows us access to the international sport kiting competitive 'scene' and ensures that we are consistent with world wide standards.

Stunt Kiting Workshops

How many people out there buy a stunt kite and then lose interest once they can steer it around the sky? How many know that there is a lot more to be learnt, but don't know where they can see or learn more? It is difficult to learn the more advanced tricks because the sport is so young in SA that there are relatively few people doing them. But don't underestimate the rate at which it's growing. Besides Cape Town, there are strong groups following kiting in Durban, Bloemfontein and Johannesburg at least.

SAKFA, with STACK's help, are making an effort to open the next level of sport kiting to those that are keen to get a little (or a lot!) more out of it. Be it precision flying, tricks, quad, ballet, pairs, team - these are all being practised in SA to levels comparable to anywhere in the world. But we need growth.

During the course of 1998, it is intended to hold workshops for groups that are interested, hopefully in PE, Durban, Bloem and Jo'burg, starting in PE at the Splash Festival set for Easter weekend.

On offer is primarily a league workshop to share experience in organising a local league, judging and competition flying. But most other aspects are available, just tell us what you're up to and what we can do for you.

Please let us know of any enthusiasts, groups or sport kiting activities that you know of so that we can tell others and grow the sport for the benefit of all.

We'd appreciate hearing from you on internet address:

or telephone 021 794 7098 (a/h), or write to me c/o SAKFA.
